Notes on 2019 work: My great-aunt, Maria Suszynska-Bartman, was a prominent Polish writer/poet who chronicled her experiences in female labor and concentration camps during WWII in a 1971 book, Nieswiete Meczennice. The book was written in Polish and published by a defunct communist press yet offers vivid imagery of both the horrors of war and persecution as well as the rare moments of beauty, fidelity, and humanity. I created a short series of medium-to-large oils based upon this book, seeking to foster attention and discussion about the loss of our cultural and basic, humanistic convictions due to generational time-passing.
