statement | kenneth susynski
Kenneth Susynski presents a unique, hybrid style of figurative abstraction in narrative compositions that explore emotional contrasts in our human lives. Having been raised primarily in Germany yet also in Turkey and Korea, he eagerly developed a thirst for art - specifically, the figure - and a lifelong interest in human behavior through the influence of firsthand experience of contrasting cultures and customs. A lifelong interest in historical and contemporary black-and-white photography shapes his rendering of the human form. Working in oils, his goal is to create fresh, vibrant works that are lastingly meaningful, timely and timeless, and evoke his spirit.
"Kenneth Susynski’s oil paintings are an amalgamation. He draws from a variety of distinct traditions—impressionism, portraiture, figuration, abstraction, photography—to create uniquely hybrid work. Bold strokes coalesce into forms, which move in and out of representational modes—intricately rendered faces emerge from bursts of color suggesting bodies. The images gesture toward art-historical tropes and narratives without fully embodying them; his figures are somehow both vague and distinct, achieving a sense of timelessness."
